First Term Accomplishments
Represented the school board through two successful MRTA bargaining agreements;
Advocated provincially through the English Language Learner Consortium;
Participated on the Education Advisory Committee, the Maple Ridge Social Policy Advisory Committee and frequent attendee at DPAC meetings; and
Made progress on my provincial motion for fully-funded teaching positions for all correctional facilities in BC.
In the Community
Literacy Outreach Coordinator for Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Katzie since 2011
Promote literacy awareness and programs to community groups and service providers;
Collaborate with First Books Canada to foster an early love of reading by sourcing hundreds of thousands of dollars new books for children of low-income families;
Create free language and literacy learning opportunities for adults in the community; and
Chair the Local Immigrant Partnership (LIPs) group.
Coordinator, The Hive Neighbourhood Centre at Eric Langton Elementary since 2010.
Brought community programming into the school, including aboriginal youth and family groups;
Ran community kitchens and food skills programs; and
Coordinated over 20 Children’s Clothing Freecycles providing clean, gently worn outfits for growing children.
Before discovering the joys of working in my own community, my earlier career included overseas ESL teaching and editing work; Trade & Investment Officer for the Ontario Ministry of Industry, Trade & Technology; Systems Project Manager for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources; Executive Assistant to the Consul General of Japan in Vancouver; and Trade Officer for the Japan External Trade Organization.
My formal education includes a BA in International Relations, University of Toronto
