Advocacy
This Board’s commitment to the well-being of our students and staff is reflected in a strong and sustained record of advocacy.
The Board’s broader advocacy record also includes StrongStart, student voice, substance-use education, school food funding, teacher preparation, school-area standards and adequate provincial funding for public education.
I will also continue my advocacy for adequate, sustainable funding for K–12 education in provincial correctional centres, so that incarcerated learners have the educational supports they need to work toward graduation.
Most recently, a key priority has been securing more equitable CommunityLINK funding to support vulnerable students and families. The Board has raised this issue repeatedly with the provincial government since 2023, including formal letters in 2024 and 2025. Despite that advocacy, SD42 continues to receive the lowest combined CommunityLINK and Equity of Opportunity per-student funding in B.C.
In 2025, the Board established an ad hoc Advocacy Committee of the Whole to develop and implement a strategy for more equitable CommunityLINK, Equity of Opportunity and National School Food Program funding. CommunityLINK remains an active priority, with the Board continuing to press the provincial government for a funding model that better reflects the needs of the students and families we serve.
